University At A Glance PDF Print E-mail

When the University of Ranchi was established on July 12,1960, it had 10 postgraduate departments, one constituent college (Ranchi College, Ranchi) and 20 affiliated colleges having territorial jurisdiction over an area of 65,000 sq km. its location in the predominantly tribal area carries with it special obligations and responsibilities, particularly towards the backwards population. This University has to cater the needs of multi-lingual population. For many decades it remained the SOLE centre of higher education in this region and it successfully met the expectations and aspirations of the people.

Even today this University is the leading institution of higher learning in this part of the country in terms of territorial jurisdiction it has, composition of the population it caters to the needs of , range, dimension & quality of academic programmes/courses it offers and avenues for research it provides.

At present Ranchi University has 23 post-graduate, departments, 15 constituent colleges, 24 affiliated colleges/institutions besides Academic Staff College and Adult Continuing education & Extension Department. Eight deans of faculties oversee the academic affairs in different disciplines. It has (in its rank) 1 medical collages, 1 law colleges, 4 technical institutes, 2 institutes of neuro-psychiatry and allied sciences, 3 autonomous college and 1 management institute.

Two of its units namely Jamshedpur Women’s College and St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi were accorded College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) status by UGC. 15 colleges/ institutions under Ranchi University have been accredited by NAAC.

Ranchi University has a separate administrative block containing university secretariat (Birsa bhawan), examination section (Tagore Bhawan) and Maulana Azad senate hall in the heart of the city. Adult continuing education & extension department functions from the same campus.

University departments, academic staff college, central library, university computer centre, tabulation centre, multi purpose examination hall are situated at Morhabadi near Ranchi College, Ranchi. It has 2 hostels for post graduate students- one for boys at Morhabadi and another for girls at Bariatu where the university quarters for teachers and staff are located. For undergraduate students there are more than a dozen hostels on the campus of concerned units. Recently an off campus office for Vice-Chancellor became operational near women’s section of Marwari College.

Some highlights of the University:

Central Library

Ranchi University has a central library having more than 90000 text books, 10000 reference books and 350 Ph.D theses. Students, research scholars and teachers use these materials in its calm, comforting and serene atmosphere. With the introduction of fully operational INFLIBNET facility (connected through dedicated lease line to INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmadabad) the utility of central library has increased many fold. Several thousands e-journals are thus made available which will immensely help research scholars, students and teachers. As far as extending this facility to other units is concerned this will act as a central hub. Connectivity has already been extended to Ranchi College and very soon all university departments and ASC will have this facility. Considering its importance its working hour has been extended upto 8pm.

Academic Staff College

Academic Staff College of Ranchi University is involved in the mission of professional development of faculty on a continuous basis by providing a platform through which faculty/ officers can enrich their knowledge, imbibe healthy work culture practices and acquire information about new ideas, latest methodologies, process and techniques. Apart from conducting orientation programmes and refresher courses in regular disciplines it is making a conscious effort of arranging programmes in non conventional but highly relevant domains such as Art of living, Environmental Science, Information Technology, Women’s study etc. A state-of-the-art and fully computerized ‘Ramanujan’ multi-media lab established last year has been further strengthened. This is rendering great service towards the realization of computer man power development goal which will allow increasing use of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in our affairs.

University Computer Centre & Tabulation Centre

Ranchi University has a separate fully computerized tabulation center in which the latest software Exsys, prepared by MECON Ltd in collaboration with Ranchi University has been installed. This software takes care of various works related to the Examination Section viz, registration, issuance of admit card, mark sheet, provisional degrees/ certificates (bilingual format with hologram) and migration certificates relating to students.

Courtesy this facility, Ranchi University has not only succeeded in reducing drastically the time factor involved but has also achieved a fair degree of transparency, cost effectiveness and confidentiality. Through the use of a unique watermark and barcode Ranchi University is making sincere efforts to thwart attempts to forge documents. Very soon tabulation centre will be shifted to a new building near multi-purposes examination hall at Morhabadi. This will be equipped with 30 networked computers with necessary peripherals and related software for better management of examination related works.

The present set up with its accessories will be merged with University Computer Centre located at Central Library.

Vocational Studies

In keeping with the UGC’s concept of ‘Career Orientation to Education’ (read vocationalisation of education), Ranchi University introduced several vocational subjects in 1994-95, the year this scheme was launched by UGC. At degree level (Three year honours course) 16 such subjects are available in 18 of its colleges. With the introduction of Certificate, Diploma & Advanced Diploma (Add-on courses), Ranchi University is trying to provide greater horizontal mobility to students by offering 10 such courses. At present this facility is available in four colleges. In a similar move, wherever possible, colleges in rural/semi urban areas are trying to provide this facility by opening study centres in collaboration with IGNOU and similar governmental agencies.

Even at post graduate level many courses are available which include M.B.A., M.C.A.,M.Sc. in Electronics and Communications, P.G. Diploma in Medicinal Plants and L.K.M.-first ever such course in entire eastern India. The range of self-financing/professional courses has been further widened with the introduction of B.Ed. programme in 10 constituent colleges and LL.B course at Jamshedpur Co-operative College.

Academic Development Activities

At present there are more than a dozen major research projects (besides several minor research projects) running in different subjects in almost all faculties. While majority of these are with teachers of post graduate departments, college teachers too are not lagging behind in this endeavour. Ranchi Colege alone got 7 mnor research projects in the beginning of this year. Several proposals from different colleges/departments are expected to be approved by UGC. It is worth mentioning that Prof. V.K.Singh of Co-operative College, Jamshedpur has given a prestigious project by BARC.

Recently University has created three visiting professor faculty positions in honour of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the faculty of humanities, L.P.Vidharthi in University departemtn of Anthropology and Enayat Ahmad in University department of Geography.

Extra Curricular Activities

To ensure all round development of students, Ranchi University gives special attention to sports, cultural activities, social services (through NSS) and works seriously to inculcate patriotic values (via NCC). It is due to the sincere and laborious efforts of the students and authorities that Ranchi University’s students have been able to carve a niche at the national level. In addition to routine programmes, Annual Games are held regularly in almost all colleges and also collectively by Ranchi University. Our students participate in all major competitions organized at zonal and national levels. Our performance in Archery has been Excellent. We bagged ‘team championship’ in All India Inter-university Archery (Men) tournament and got 4th position in All India Inter-university hockey (Women) tournament held at Manipur University, Manipur. In All India Inter-university Chess tournament held at V.I.T., Vellore our university was placed at 5th position. In Chancellor’s cup tournament, we are the champion in both (M&W) categories in volleyball and in football we succeeded to get the top position in male category but our eves missed the target by whisker and had to settle for 2nd position.

Option of NCC is available in 19 colleges of this University with more than 3610 cadets enrolled under the supervision of 21 officers, 18 of them being of commissioned rank. Several NCC cadets of this University have been awarded scholarships.

As far as cultural activities are concerned, the Youth festivals are organized in all colleges, culminating in the grand finale organised by the university. Ranchi University has excellent track record in these activities.

Performance of NSS has been praiseworthy. Besides actively participating in regular activities (Rallies, Awareness campaign, and social services) NSS volunteers’ role during and after any natural calamity has been exemplary.

Scholarships

37 ST students of this University have been selected or Rajiv Gandhi national Fellowship. A sum of Rs. 71 lacs has been sanctioned in this connection. To encourage/motivate other students R.U. started awarding such students with “Certificate of Excellence”. In addition to this, a NRI sponsored Sushma Rani Memorial Scholarship is available exclusively for the students of Ranchi College, Ranchi.

Students Friendly Initiatives

Ranchi University has an ambitious plan to open its branch offices in majority of the major towns falling under its jurisdiction. Besides reducing the pressure on the headquarter. It will save time and money of students & guardians. It is also an important step in the direction of decentralization. Presently Jamshedpur and Daltonganj have two such centres. Ranchi University is trying to provide quality student support systems. Our student shave already got Grievance Redressal Cell, ST/SC Cell, S.C. Pre-Exams Training Centre, Ranchi and NET/JRF Coaching / Counselling Centre, Jamshedpur for their benefits. Teacher-Parents Meets are also organized.

Infrastructural Augmentation Activities

Thanks to the guidance from H.E.Syed Sibtey Razi, Governor of the state & Chancellor of the universities of Jharkhand and generous support from HRD, Dept., Govt. of Jharkhand, Ranchi University is witnessing unprecedented (both in scale and amount involved) new construction and renovation works. Several new blocks/buildings/halls have been added to the physical resources of this university. A new building at Graduate School College for Women at JSR has been inaugurated by H.E.Syed Sibtey Razi. K.S. College Seraikela got a new girl’s hostel which was inaugurated by Sri Madhu Koda, Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Multi-purposes examination hall at Jamshedpur Co-operative College is also complete.

Marching Ahead . . . . .

Ranchi University has initiated several steps towards this goal:

A Women Study Centre has started functioning at Ranchi Women’s College in pursuance of UGC approved idea of ensuring gender equity, economic self-reliance of women. With this addition, Ranchi University joined a select few which are having this facility.

Ranchi University has entered the domain of Virtual Interactive Teaching with the installation of ISRO-sponsored EDUSAT at Ranchi Women’s College.
