The University Department of History started Post-Graduate teaching in July 1951 with Professor Gupteshwar Nath as head of the Department for which the Government Provided all facilities. The Department very soon left behind other Departments largely because of the fact that some eminent teachers made strenuous efforts to popularise the subject. Late professor Man Govind Banerjee was a real scholar of History and popular teacher. Professor Gupteshwar Nath retired in March 1957 and Dr. P. N. Ojha became the head of the Department with effect from 21st March, 1957. The real progress of the Department began when Dr. P. N. Ojha, Dr. B. K. Roy, Dr. J. N,. Sarkar joined the Department. In the meantime Dr. S. M. Pathak, Dr. S. N. Singh, Dr. A. P. Sharma, Dr. B. Virottam, Mrs. Indu Dhan, Prof. J. Singh joined the Department. During the following decade Dr. C. P. Singh as a result of his transfer from Tata College, Chaibasa joined the Department. Under the able guidance of Dr. Ojha, the development made phenomenal progress.The research activities were pursued since the inception of the Department and a good number of research scholars have been awarded the degree of Ph.D. and D.Litt. Till date more than two hundred thirteen scholars have been awarded degrees of Ph.D. and D.Litt under the guidance of the Department so far.The Department has been publishing a regular Journal of its own known as Journal of Historical Research. The 48th volume brought out on the occasion of 15th August, 2006. The forthcoming issue is an special issue on the revolt of 1857 to mark the 150th anniversary of the revolt. Indian Council of Historical Research (I.C.H.R.) granted rupees seventy five thousand for a National level seminar in 2007 under the guidance of the Department.It has been the policy of the Department to encourage teachers and students to participate in seminars, conferences and academic assignments. In the history of the Department was an event of prime importance was the session of Indian History Congress of 1964 at Ranchi. The Indian History Congress was invited to hold its session at Ranchi under the auspices of the university Department of History Ranchi University, Ranchi.The members of the faculty have invariably attended seminars and conferences and some of them have been regularly attending the session of Indian History Congress, Bihar Itihas parishad and Bihar Itihas shodh Mandal. Many teachers of the Department have visited foreign countries like chechoslovakia, west Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, England and United Arab Republic, Maurities, Nepal and delivered lectures and conducted research seminars on Indian History and culture. The Department has established Departmental Museum where several images, coins, terracota, inscriptions, manuscripts, old weapons are kept. The Department has made progress but still it has a long way to go ahead. The Department is determind to go ahead with a greater zeal.2.
